Happy P Day! Celebrate with an edible George Washington cake!

February 20, 2012 in Food, News, Projects

Today is our third favorite February holiday, behind Groundhog’s Day and our anniversary but still beating out Valentine’s Day, yes of course I’m talking about P Day!!  Also known as President’s Day.  And George Washington’s Birfday. Whateva you call it, we love it, being patriotic Americans and whatnot. So of course the extended Mullinax Clan gets together in St. Joe to celebrate the holiday and we decided the best way to celebrate was to create a bust of George Washington made of sugar!  But could such a project really be completed in a limited amount of time without spending a billion dollars? The celebration was to be on Saturday and on Friday morning the Fondant George wasn’t even an idea yet…

Eggnog Whoopie Pies Recipe

December 18, 2011 in Food

While trimming the tree this season I was inspired to create an eggnoggy tasty treat.  After a couple of tries this is what I finally came up with.  The recipe is based upon homemade eggnog because I abhor grocery store eggnog.  Though I cannot attest to the results, it seems feasible that purchased eggnog could be used to save a little time.  If you do decide to make your own eggnog it’s best to prepare it along with the eggnog pastry cream a day ahead to allow for proper cooling.

Yoko-Ono-Yaki

December 14, 2011 in Food

We used to have a wonderful restaurant in Overland Park called One Bite that introduced us to the Okonomi-Yaki, a Japanese savory pancake/omelet dish that we love. One Bite has a few variations, including the Cheese Bomb Yaki that was super tasty! Unfortunately, One Bite is closing it’s doors!   They promised to return in 2012 in the form of a new restaurant in Kansas City’s Westport area (One Bite Sama Zama?!?), but in the mean time I decided had to try to recreate a yaki of my very own. This dish was based off of JustHungry‘s Okonomiyaki, Osaka style.  When I began, I was planning on following the recipe, but by the time I was done gathering ingredients, I had Americanized it, or rather Mullieized it.  I decided that it probably isn’t a traditional Okonomiyaki, so this is my Yoko-Ono-Yaki, because Yoko Ono is sorta Asian like this dish.

80/35 Music Festival – Des Moines, IA – July 2-3, 2011

July 7, 2011 in Food, Music, News

Last week I saw an ad for the 80/35 music festival in Des Moines.  The lineup seemed pretty sweet, especially considering the price was only $60 for both days.   If I would have bought tickets a few months ago, I could have gotten a ticket for $35 (!), which is a mind blowing deal when you look at comparable festivals.  So I went ahead and checked for hotel availability in the area and found a Marriott that was like 3 blocks away from the festival.   Cat’s brother agreed to come over and dog-sit, so we bought tickets and were set for our impromptu vacation. Father’s Day Smoked Brisket & Bean BBQ

June 25, 2011 in Food

I know Father’s Day was technically last week, but we are celebrating this weekend instead with a tasty BBQ on Sunday.   So we’re firing up the smoker and doing all the work on Saturday, so we can roll in to my folks place with a bunch of already prepared food and we can spend the time with the family instead of cooking. Here’s a quick run-down of our menu, followed by recipes for the stuff we came up with: Smoked BBQ Beef Brisket (dry rubbed and smoked with apple wood), Brioche Buns (She Simmers), Smoked BBQ Beans, Bread & Butter Pickles, Mango Slaw, and Asparagus and Potato Salad with Riesling-Tarragon Vinaigrette (Food & Wine) Read the rest of this entry →

Happy Birthday Kitty!  I’m sorry our dinner at Pachamama’s was so horrible for you.   And I’m sorry I didn’t bake you a cake.
